Wings of a
Celestial
Eidolon
 by Marge Simon
Eidolon
 by Marge Simon
You hold me here
in this primitive cell,
thinking I’m content.
You have no idea what I feel,
watching the people pass
beyond my cage.

A teacher brings her children
to observe and learn.
She tells them I’m a homonid,
creation of technicians who
would have the world believe
the Word of Genesis is false.

There is a movement
to have me destroyed;
they say I’m unnatural,
surely not created
by their all-holy God.
They do not understand
I’m bio-engineered.

You don’t recognize this face;
you see the pigment of my skin
and will not meet my eyes,
saying they’re abnormal,
for I can see in sunlight
as well as infrared,
I can even see through you!
My chest expands
to twice its size,
skin, bone and muscle,
impervious to radiation.

Shame on your imprudence!
I was made a missing link,
as Oeeoin or sapiens idaltu,
but I am neither; I am the Eve
preceding the new Adam,
forwarding evolution
two steps ahead of time.

I am the blueprint
for your future generations,
when humanity crawls forth
to step into the stars.
