The Game's Afoot
 by Stephanie Johnson
Breathing.
Hard.

Legs.
Spaghetti.

Heart.
Oh, my heart.

Can’t stop.
I thought ...

It was so funny.

Breathing.
So hard.

I thought it was an awesome prank.

Fuck, it’s getting closer.
Why did I do it?

Arg, my knees.
Who the hell said ...
          fucking with ...
                    a unicorn ...
                              would be ...
                                        a fun thing to do?

Imma gonna kill ’em.

My ma said
     if someone told me
     to jump
     off the Brooklyn
     Bridge
     I’d do it.

I’m such an idiot.

Joe led me
(Wait ... can it cross water?)
“let’s go to where it drinks every dawn,” he said.

Oh God, so cold!

We got there;
He had on
     hardcore
     Running shoes

Oh man, I’m soaked,
Dammit.

He had a stick.
A fucking stick.

We jumped out.
Joe yelled,
“The game’s afoot!”

Fucking psycho.

I didn’t know
He’d sharpened the stick.
What a dick.
          (Gahhh, it’s crossing,
          Maybe that was werewolves.)

Fuck, it’s almost on me.

This asshole behind me now
Is the biggest thing I’ve ever seen.

Joe laughed and said
He didn’t have to outrun it,
that he only had to outrun me.

He didn’t know
I always won Parkrun
     Before the monsters came.

FUUUUUUUCK!
My knees my knees ...

Joe won’t be leading me
Astray any more ...

Sorry Ma—

Breath
     inches from
          My neck.

It passes:
all white foam and wild eyed
     a trail of blood behind
Marking
Calling something
     hungrier,
     older
     than either of us.
